A challenge has arisen against the American Citizen and Immigration Service to renew 2.80 lakh green cards before September 30. These pending applications need to be disposed of before the end of the financial year.
US President Joe Biden in March ordered the immigration agency to dispose of all green card applications. About 2.80 lakh applications are pending. Due to the pandemic, numerous applications for employment-based green cards were not processed, now the burden of processing those applications has increased.
The US immigration agency had 4.21 lakh applications pending for interviews in April. Of these, 2.80 lakh applications which have reached the last stage are yet to be issued. The challenge has arisen to dispose of these applications before 30th September. Right now, the US Immigration Service is processing twice as many applications per week as it did last year. In May-2022, American agencies processed 1.49 lakh visa applications.
According to US statistics, about 14 lakh foreign citizens are waiting for US green card. Very few of them get green cards. In 2021, America gave 1.80 lakh green cards. As of 2022, the average waiting time for a green card at the immigration agency is three years. That is, the application process starts three years after the application.
