Seoul, dated 4
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in South Korea on Thursday after visiting Taiwan despite China’s threat, creating a highly tense situation in relations between China and Taiwan. As part of her Asia tour, Pelosi met with political leaders in the South Korean capital of Seoul, but refrained from making direct public comments on relations with Beijing and Taipei. Pelosi is the first US Speaker of the House to visit Taiwan in its 25-year history. Pelosi supported Taiwan’s democratic independence in Taipei on Wednesday. However, after meeting with South Korean National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo and other leaders on Thursday, Pelosi spoke of enhancing bilateral ties, but made no direct mention of the Taiwan visit or opposition to China.
